Webinar on the topic of Tetrao urogallus (Capercaillies) monitoring, held on March 10, 2021. is the first in a series of webinars which will be organized within the project “BEAR in Mind: Bringning environmental actions for the biodiversity protection across the borders”. The role of the lecturer belonged to Tomaž Mihelič, ornithologist of the Society for the Observation and Research of Birds of Slovenia (DOPPS).
The aim of the webinar was to introduce the monitoring of birds, on the example of capercaillies (Tetrao urogallus), and the invitation for participation was sent to all nature lovers, students, ornithologists, as well as representatives of state and local institutions working to protect biodiversity in the project area (Nature park “Piva” and National park “Durmitor” in Montenegro; Nature park “Blidinje” and National park “Sutjeska” in Bosnia and Herzegovina).
After a short presentation of the project, more than 50 participants listened to a lecture by Mr. Tomaž Mihelič, in which he presented the biology and ecology of the species, recognizing and recording traces of capecaillies for monitoring purposes, and the results of telemetry monitoring of the species in Slovenia.
It is important to note that within the BEAR in Mind project, telemetric monitoring of capercaillies, as well as rock partridges, is planned in four protected areas in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro. In this way, their movement, habitat, feeding dynamics, as well as other scientifically interesting habits will be monitored. The data obtained in this way will also be used for the development of the Tetrao urogallus Management plan on the territory of the protected areas: Nature park “Piva” and National park “Durmitor” in Montenegro and Nature park “Blidinje” and National park “Sutjeska” in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
